This is the second year I get invited to schools to share about my immigrant journey and my Guatemalan heritage.
This year, I had the privilege to share with an elementary school and a high school! Besides schools, I also shared about my heritage on our local publish library's Facebook page. Of course, because of the pandemic, these presentations were organized virtually but they were still fun and filled with so much learning. Ross Elementary - Signature Music School in KS, held their annual Hispanic Heritage Assembly virtually and I had the honor to share a stage with the amazing artist Aaron de la Cuz. Since I knew I was presenting to an elementary audience, I shared my piñata, my cascarones (confetti filled egg shells), how I make my tortillas, and much more! Here is the recording if you'd like to see it. I know students had a blast and they had really great questions (they always ask about the Ellen experience).
I also had the honor to share with HS students at Bellport HS South County Central Schools in New York!
This presentations were a little different than the presentation for elementary students. With HS students I was able to share more of my immigrant journey as well as my experience as an English learner here in the USA. I had two presentations, one for general HS students and another one specifically for English learners. I LOVED sharing with them. I shared all my goodies from Guatemala and did not hold back on sharing my experience as an English learner. Students had great questions and I was told they were all engaged! It was fun
Also, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Literacy Services Coordinator, Caitlyn Mitchell, interviewed local Hispanic Americans to learn about their respective countries of origin, their different cultures, and to recognize the contributions that they have made to our community! I was honored to be included and invited to participate in this awesome series of Latinx presentations.
How did you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? If you're Latinx, did you share about your background? I can't wait to see what 2021 brings. I just love sharing and embracing my culture!
Thank you for reading!
