I wanted to share with you a couple of lessons my newcomer ELs enjoyed this month. Students had fun finishing up these lessons and they learned a lot. Their final project was amazing and very creative! We started reading a couple of articles. One article was an article we read during small group guided reading, and the other was an article they read as a group. Both articles highlight the journey of teenagers who had to leave their home country to reunite with family in the USA. The two articles we used were: "Running from Danger, Looking for Hope" from Scholastic Action magazines & "15-Year-Old Waiting Months in Shelter to Join Mother in California" from NewsELA.

Small Groups and Group ProjectI provided each group a big piece of white bulletin board paper to use as a project presentation. Because they have done this in another class, students thought about tracing a student to create a person cut out. Students added the characters' information just like they had it on their graphic organizers. Their presentation project was amazing. Some added more details than others but it just really shows what they can do at their level of English proficiency. While students worked in their groups creating a presentation for our class, I worked in small groups using the graphic organizer above to write about both characters. The writing process we followed was very simple, we just discuss how we can create paragraphs using the information we already have in our graphic organizer. Here's an example/idea of what our paragraphs looked like: I learned about Freddy and Vladi. These two characters have several similarities and differences. Freddy is 18 years old. He is from Honduras. He has a mother and 2 sisters in Honduras. He left Honduras because he was threatened by gangs. He came to the USA looking for his dad in TX. He is an immigrant. He came to the USA with other immigrants. He was in a concentration camp for three months. He is now with this dad in TX. He is going to school. Vladi is 15 years old. He is from El Salvador. His dad is in prison. He left El Salvador because gangs were threatening him. His mother lived in the USA. He is an immigrant. He traveled to the USA with other immigrants. He was in an immigrant shelter. He was caught by immigration. He is waiting for asylum. Freddy and Vladi are immigrants. Both left their home country because of gangs and poverty. Both traveled undocumented. Both came to the USA looking for a parent. Both were caught by immigration. Both came to the USA looking for a better life and future. My students felt empowered when they saw how much writing they could do just with the information provided in the graphic organizer.
We used these paragraphs to read and review the information we've learned. Great speaking and reading opportunities since it's information they created themselves. Next week, my students will be creating a compare and contrast of their personal lives and one of the characters. I will be posting this later next month.
